Spelling does matter.

Not only does spelling matter, the weekly spelling list can form the core of a language/literacy program that provides students with a thorough understanding, not only of how words work, but also of word meanings in various contexts.

Structuring literacy activities around a hierarchical spelling program will provide a cohesive structure that leaves nothing to chance, and may well reduce the possibility of gaps appearing in students’ literacy knowledge as they progress through the grades.

Learning to Spell Regular Words

Spelling Program: Regular Words Book 1: Sets 1-5 #13301   $44.00

The c-v-c word lists are based on the Carnine order of teaching the alphabet.  The spelling lists are cumulative so that the teacher may proceed from list to list through the book knowing that the list words will maintain previous learning.

Spelling Program: Regular Words Book 2: Sets 6-29 #13302   $44.00

This book lists all the initial blend words before introducing final consonant blend words. Towards the end of the book some quite challenging consonant blends are introduced, e.g. words ending in ‘dge, ‘-tch’ and ‘-lch’ and words beginning with ‘thr-’, ‘spl-’ and ‘scr-’. Because there are some digraphs, e.g. ‘ay’, ‘oy’,  which are easier to learn than these difficult blends, it is best to postpone teaching the triple blends until later in the program.

Spelling Program: Regular Words Book 3: Digraphs #13303   $55.00

This text  is arranged so that each digraph family is organised in three ways:

1. by level of difficulty.
2. by providing of sentences at the end of each word family, which can be used for reading, dictation or testing.
3. by providing a revision page after every three digraph families. The page contains words and sentences which can be used to test whether students have maintained previous learning

Learning to Spell Irregular (Sight) Words

Sight Words Books 1 and 2 include flashcard master sheets, a ‘concentration’ baseboard master and record sheets. Master sheets can be converted to flashcards for reading practice or into card games such as ‘snap’, ‘go fish’, ‘concentration’, etc.

Spelling Program: Sight Words Book 1 #13501  $33.00

Spelling Program: Sight Words Book 2 #13502 $33.00

Spelling Program: Sight Words Book 3: All the Tricky Ones #13503 $55.00

Sight Words Book 3 is a K-6 teachers’ reference book. It contains irregular words grouped by a ‘tricky’ letter or sound.  For example, it contains a group of words with the same pattern as the word ‘was’ (‘a’ saying short /ŏ/), or by common spelling pattern, e.g. ‘hurry’, ‘curry’.

Where possible, words are grouped by level of difficulty. Thus the sight word ‘was’ is grouped at the easy level with words such as ‘want’, ‘wash’ and ‘wasp’,  and at the harder level with words such as ‘wattle’, ‘waddle’ and ‘wallaby’.  The index at the back of the book lists all words, for easy reference.

Each set of words is followed by sentences for reading and dictation work.

Letter Sound Relationships

This set of books was created especially for students who require smaller learning steps and more practice opportunities.  With the aid of a base card and flash-cards, and using match-to-sample techniques, the teacher can take the student from three-letter words through to words with initial and final blends and on to more complex words containing digraphs.

Each book matches the regular spelling list books. The words are provided in a bingo-card format so that teachers may easily produce various games, such as ‘concentration’ and ‘snap’.  (A proforma for a ‘Concentration’ baseboard is provided at the end of each book.)

Sentences and Passages

Dictation Sentences, Passages & Comprehension Questions: Sets 1-5 #13801    $44.00

The major issue in completing a dictation for young students is the task of remembering the sentence in order to write it. There are strategies for remembering important information and these need to be taught to young students and older students with poor auditory memory ability.  Directions are provided to teach students how to do a dictation.

The dictation/reading sentences match the word lists in Regular Words Book 1 Sets 1-5.  Each of the sets include a list of dictation sentences, a set of ‘bingo’ card layouts for games, and record sheets to monitor student progress.  Sets 3, 4 and 5 also include short passages followed by simple comprehension questions.
