Two types of cues have been used extensively in these practice sheets. They are designed to help those students who may have short-term memory problems in the acquisition phase of learning a new concept, and to keep the space around each separate problem ‘tidy’ so that simple layout errors are not made (especially when ‘carrying’).
The ‘Remember Box’ is used when two digits have been added resulting in a sum greater than 9. The sum is written in the ‘remember box’ before carrying. The ‘Carry Box’ is used to make sure that the carried number is added to the top of the correct column.
